Study Shows Men Are Just As Stressed As Women In Achieving Work-Life BalanceStudy Shows Men Are Just As Stressed As Women In Achieving Work-Life Balance The startling results of an American Psychological Association study , indicating males are as conflicted as females, contradicts a commonly held belief that men dont stress over work-life balance. However, Krister Ungerboeck, a consultant for geschftliches miteinander leaders, isnt taken aback by the fact that, despite public perception, both men and women have nearly identical levels of conflict in work-balance.Ungerboeck says men are dealing with the double whammy of feeling guilty for missing their kids lives and at the same time ashamed for not seeming cutthroat enough at work. The former CEO of a struggling software company, which he expanded 3000%, Ungerboeck experienced at first hand the personal costs of stereotypical masculinity. That in-the-trenches experience enabled Ungerboeck to found CEO Growth , a co aching firm exclusively for the C-suite.Despite common expectations, Ungerboeck says that the lessons he learned in his own career about giving consideration to the family are just as important as any bottom-line wisdom.As important as it is to help CEOs and owners push business to the next level, says the father of two, it is equally important to help them gain perspective on the value of a personal life.Glassdoor Do you see men struggling with the expectation that they must live up to a stereotype of masculinity which the report indicates is outdated and toxic?Krister Ungerboeck Yes. Theres mora of an expectation that men who are in the workforce, are going to put their job ahead of their kids, and their family. Theyre going to be the ones who work late. But the truth is a lot of us struggle with that. Men often feel they arent supposed to take a personal day when their kid is sick, so they dont.I think there is an element of cultural norms, where maybe its expected for a man to be able to stay late. When I welches a CEO, I was probably unconsciously more flexible when a woman, even a woman executive, if she needed to do some things to go do things for the kids. There was an assumption about male and female roles.I think that that maybe puts a little more pressure on male executives, or men in the workforce, who dont get that flexibility. Add to that, if I were to look at the number of times that male executives came to me and asked for time off for their kids, it was significantly lower.Many executives had wives who worked, and I think thats theres also some cultural expectation that in a two-income family (even if they are equal earners) that matters of the family would anliegen more frequently onto the female.Glassdoor How do we change the idea of masculinity in the workplace? If these are untruths, how do we knock them down?Krister Ungerboeck The change really needs to start from the top-down. Bosses need to make it clear that they prioritize their own children and their own family responsibilities, and let their employees see that it is okay to leave work early sometimes if your child is ill or has a ball game. They also need to encourage employees to use their vacation days and to take regular breaks.Glassdoor But a lot of employees feel unsafe to take family time. How do you allay those fears, changing the office culture?Krister Ungerboeck Its the boss whose actions get amplified, right? So, if your employees hear you say, Hey, Im going to my sons baseball game. Im leaving the office at 430 today they know its safe for them to attend to their families too. ? Being clear with people, letting people know, and then setting an example that its okay to leave at 5 oclock is powerful.Glassdoor One of the biggest hurdles we all face is time. How do you handle all that time at work away from family?Krister Ungerboeck I have been guilty in the past of spending too much time working. I used to tell people that my longest day was 42 hou rs. We now know we have research that shows us that we dont function well in that kind of situation. You cant get good work done.Someone told me once that its actually the people who really should be respected are the people who are able to get the job done and achieve the business results in 40-50 hours, not the people who have to take 80 hours to do the same level of results.Glassdoor Knowing from data that too many hours arent productive, have you changed your use of time?Krister Ungerboeck Yes. I dont think that Ive consistently spent more than 45 hours in the office in ten years. With emailing and phoning time (from home) its maybe 50 hours. It gets done and I have a better balance. I dont have all the stress and dorfwiese that built up when almost my whole life was work.Glassdoor By managing your hours, but not lessening your productivity it sets an example, too?Krister Ungerboeck Yes, thats setting an example.Its how you treat your employees time that also sends a message . When I would call my executives on the weekend or in the evening I have told them to let the call go to voicemail. That way I can let them know if they need to return the call right away, or if it can wait until Monday. If its an urgent matter they know to call. I dont think that, probably for the last 10 years, I can think of a time that I would regularly call any executives outside of business hours unless it was urgent. And if you have urgent matters more than a handful of times per year, then you probably have a different problem in your business.Glassdoor This study makes the point that fathers want to be more involved with family than in past generations. Is that true from your experience?Krister Ungerboeck I think definitely, that compared to the baby boomer parents, my generation (in his early 40s) wants more involvement in our kids lives. A lot of the CEOs I coach want, of course, to improve professionally, but they want help with their personal relationships too.Glassdo or You refer to yourself as a Recovering Asshole CEO. Why did you change that toxic part of your life?Krister Ungerboeck It was a combination of a couple things. Part of the change came about after one of those anonymous 360 surveys. It was part of a leadership program that I was participating in. I had been told that the more toxic the boss, the more data is needed. If 30 people are saying all the same things about you, its hard to ignore. I knew I had to change.In my case, the 360 survey crossed from business to personal. Before this survey, I thought, Im a different person at work than I am personally. But the data showed I was having the same problems at home.When you have toxic leaders, theyre probably carrying that over to how theyre raising their kids, or carrying over to how theyre communicating with their spouse. Probably better to catch that earlier, before you get divorced, or you find out you have adult children youre not connected with.Glassdoor Youre saying that worki ng style can follow you home? That work and home are intertwined and not in a good way sometimes?Krister Ungerboeck Yes. You may be saying to yourself, Hey, thats whats gotten me successful as a CEO or a boss, but if you dont change that behavior then youre going to be passing these traits on to your kids. If youve got a lot of stress at work, you may be taking that home, to your spouse and kids Theres a fair amount of data that that stress and grasflche and frustration is contagious. By taking that frustration and anger home, it spreads to their family.Glassdoor How do you remedy that cycle of stress which has so much to do with a skewed idea of masculinity?Krister Ungerboeck This goes back to getting rid of that stereotype of masculinity. Probably one of the most impactful experiences I had with my executive team was when we actually went through a vulnerability exercise, where each of the executive team members shared. Half the people were crying because they were talking about things that were very powerful, from their childhood mostly. That brought the team together at a whole new level than we had before.Glassdoor How do you show vulnerability and honesty to your employees? What was their reaction?Krister Ungerboeck Ive gotten teared up in front of my employees. The first time I got choked up was probably about 10 years ago. I will admit that there were certainly some individuals who came to me and gave me feedback, that they actually felt that was inappropriate that I was emotional in front of employees. But just as many employees gave me positive feedback that they felt more connected.Glassdoor Was it men or women that made those negative comments?Krister Ungerboeck It was men. Frankly, I think the individuals who did that probably were just not comfortable with being vulnerable themselves. So, I took it with a grain of salt. Certainly, there are people out there who still subscribe to the CEO must not show weakness, but I think its better to be au thentic in the long run. ? Its hard to keep up that faade forever as a business becomes increasingly complex. It adds to the stress which bleeds into your home life.Getting rid of toxic masculinity starts from the top. The leaders actions give a clear indication of whats valued in the working culture. If you appreciate your family and personal time, show it. That makes it all right for everyone and changes the culture.

As the touristic throngs gawk at the twinkly lights of Times Square beyond, law school students, recent graduates and a substantial number of lateral candidates put in face time with recruiters from BigLaw, government and private corporations (the Target booth particularly resplendent in its ketchup hue). Recruiters have seen the crowd ebb and flow since the floor opened at 930 a.m., with the ever-hiring governmental agencies a popular choice in the morning and candidates stacking up for the private firms as the days progressed (at present 130 p.m. Nixon Peabody, Baker Botts, Fish Richardson and Moses Singer, among others, are keeping em waiting, whilethe DOJ seems to be the popular kid in the public sector). Anecdota l evidence suggests, logically, that more 3Ls and laterals are turning out than in years past. Deborah Innocent (JD 08, Thomas M. In screening candidates for the firms 2010 summer class, Cohen estimated that only about half the attendees shed encountered had been 2Ls, with a full quarter ofthe unemployed massespresenting themselves as lateral prospects most of the latter, Cohen said, were second-and-third-year associates whod recently received walking papers. Visitors, havingendured a constant (albeit receding) stream of cataclysmic industry nachrichten over the past year, seemed to have steeled themselves for sobering updates from the private firms. We knew nearly no one but were sure wed soon find a fun-loving group like the 20- and 30-something New Yorkers who spontaneously dropped in on one anotlagelageher on TV shows likeSeinfeldandFriends.We hatched a plan. After moving into ur Midtown Manhattan apartment, we invited all the neighbors over for drinks by placing Kinkos-printed quarter-sheets into everyones mailboxes. Then, we waited for ur versions of Chandler, Kramer, and Elaine to show up. But they didnt. In fact, no one did. As the ice in the cooler melted and the guacamole browned, not a single person among 100 apartments stopped by. Not. One. Person.Recalling that episode now, we sound embarrassingly nave. We didnt realize friendships in the real world worked nothing like the ones we had forge d in our dormitories, let alone those we saw on television. Yet as it turns out, our desire to belong to a tight community was far from foolish.Recent stusies have shown a dearth of social interaction with people you care about and who care about you not only leads to loneliness, but is also linked to a range of harmful physical effects. In other words A lack of close friendships may be hazardous to your health.Dying for friendsA 2010meta-analysisreviewed 148 studies involving over 300,000 participants and concluded that having weak social ties was as harmful to health as being an alcoholic and twice as harmful as obesity. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, co-author of the analysis, told Reuters, A lack of social relationships was equivalent to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.A more recent study, published in theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found a biological response to loneliness that triggers disease. According to the researchers, social isolation sets off a cellular c hain reaction that increases inflammation and suppresses the bodys immune response.Perhaps the most compelling evidence that friendships affect longevity comes from the ongoingHarvard Study of Adult Development. Since 1938, researchers have been following 724 men, tracking their physical health as well as social habits. Robert Waldinger, the studys current director, said in his recentTED Talk, The clearest message that we get from this 75-year study is this Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period. Socially disconnected people are, according to Waldinger, less happy, their health declines earlier in midlife, their brain functioning declines sooner, and they live shorter lives than people who are not lonely.Lest we think having 500 Facebook friends might offer some protection, Waldinger warns, Its not just the number of friends you have its the quality of your close relationships that matters.So what makes for a quality friendship? William Rawlins, a professor of int erpersonal communications at Ohio University who studies the way people interact over the course of their lives,told The Atlanticthat satisfying friendships need three things Somebody to talk to, someone to depend on, and someone to enjoy.Finding someone to talk to, depend on, and enjoy comes naturally when were young. In college, for example, we build strong bonds when nearly everyone around us is also searching for connection. But as we grow into adulthood, the model for how to maintain our friendships isnt clear. We graduate and go our separate ways, pursuing careers and starting lives miles apart from our best friends.Suddenly work obligations and ambitions trump buddies and brewskis. It becomes impossible to be spontaneous without planning for weeks, if not months, in advance. Once children enter the picture, exhilarating nights on the town become exhausted nights on the couch.Friendships starve to deathUnfortunately, the less time we invest in people, the easier it is to make do without them, until one day it becomes too awkward to reconnect. Since we havent spoken for so long, we think, where would we even begin? If we were still close friends wouldnt we have spoken more by now?This is how friendships die - they starve to death. But as the research reveals, by allowing those friendships to starve, were also malnourishing our bodies.Case in point Several months ago, I found myself in a funk. I now live in San Francisco and whenever someone asked, How are you? my reply was the standard Silicon Valley yuppie salute Good Super busy Yet this wasnt exactly true. I wasnt good.To put things in perspective, I wasnt bad, either. Things were fine. By all measures, more than fine - I had a healthy family, a growing business, and interesting clients to work with. Id recently publisheda bookthat became a Wall Street Journal best seller, and if my social media stats were to be believed, I had plenty of friends and followers.And yet, the funk. I soon identified the p roblem The more professional opportunities came my way, the more time I spent away from my real-life friends - the people I truly cared about. Maintaining friendships with people to talk to, depend on, and enjoy takes time.As an undergraduate, I first heard the term residual benefactor in an economics class. A residual benefactor is the chump who gets whatever is left over when a company is liquidated - typically, not much. When were not careful, the people we care about often become residual benefactors We leave them for last, giving them whatever bits of time are left over after weve attended to everything else.The Solution, the kibbutzIf the food of friendship is time together, how do we make the time to ensure were all fed? My friends and I have recently come across a way to keep each other close. It fits into our lifestyles despite busy schedules and a surfeit of children. We call it the kibbutz.In Hebrew, the word means gathering, and for our gathering, four couples meet eve ry two weeks to talk about one question - sort of like an interactive TED Talk over a picnic lunch. The question might range from a deep inquiry, like Whats one thing your parents taught you that you want to pass on to your children? to a lighter, more practical question, like How do you disconnect from your iPhone on weekends?Having a topic helps in two ways. For one, it gets us past the small talk of sports and weather, and helps us open up about stuff that actually matters. Second, it prevents the gender split that happens when couples convene in groups - men in one corner, women in another. The question of the day gets us all talking together.Consistency and stiff-arming the kidsEvery other week, rain or shine, the kibbutz is on our calendars - consistency is key. Theres no back-and-forth emailing to find a time. We always meet at the same place, and each couple brings their own food so theres no prep or cleanup. If one couple cant make it, no biggie, the others carry on the conversation.What about the kids? In our group, kids are welcome, but they dont run the show. Typically they play on their own, but if they interject, theyre given a stern response that sounds something like Im having a conversation with my friends because my friends are important to me. Youre welcome to listen or join the conversation, but please dont interrupt unless its an emergency.For our childrens sake, we want them to know that adult friendships matter. We dont want them to have to rely on TV to figure out how adults interact. By watching us, our children see that being a good friend means listening when others have something to share, and not being distracted by anything else - including our cellphones, the football game, or even our own children (unless someone is bleeding).The entire affair lasts about two hours, and I always leave the kibbutz with new ideas and insights. Most important, I feel closer to my friends. No, our group isnt as funny or spontaneous as the pseudo -New Yorkers I grew up watching on TV. But it turns out that fun wasnt what I was missing - it was authentic, caring friendships. Making time to invest in my most important relationships finally snapped me out of my funk and provided the psychological nourishment I didnt know I was missing.Not only that, it turns out the time I spend with my friends is also an investment in my future health. Forget diets and the latest workout routines. Many leaders think only of “the arts” when they hear the word creative. However, today’s creative companies are anchored in technologies and digital innovations. Take for example Embodied Labs, a VR film company whose films help medical providers understand patient experiences, reducing costs and improving health outcomes. Or Beacon Hill VR, a software firm with artists and gamers on staff who create and bring to life ani mated AR characters. We suspect leaders overlook the creative economy because they are unfamiliar with its numbers.Creative entrepreneurs are market disruptors building a better and more inclusive future. The innovators behind creative companies are designers, coders, gamers, musicians, and engineers. Akin to tech founders, creative founders are driven by a desire to disrupt a market. Unlike many tech founders, most creative entrepreneurs are also inspired by social outcomes such as engaging disenfranchised communities, providing a living wage, and building culturally connected communities. The creative economy is being built by visionaries who strengthen regional identity, increase livelihoods, and build connected communities.So how can you unleash the creative entrepreneurs and talent in your community? Here are three tips to get you started:1.) Find ambitious creative entrepreneurs who have been overlookedThey might be building the next Cirque du Soleil but everyone else sees the m as clowns. With fresh eyes, you might see a billion-dollar business in the making. I have worked with startups who became extremely successful entrepreneurs who have told us that early on “no one took them seriously” because they were designers, or filmmakers, or musicians.2.) Host a small gathering with innovative creative founders and investors and ask them to share where they believe your regional creative economy could be more competitiveWhat assets and competitive advantages do you have that entrepreneurs and investors have already discovered? When we do this we find investors who are already working with creative companies. They are usually interested in further building out their portfolio along these lines. And the founders are excited to meet investors who share their vision for the region’s future.3.) Assume you just don’t get it â€" yetCreatives are disrupting markets and they see a future the rest of us don’t see. Take for example the story of Meow Wolf, an â €œartist collective” based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. When Meow Wolf started out, they sought business support but were told more than once their venture should be a non-profit. They are artists, after all. Today, with over 1 million visitors and $15 million in revenues in less than two years, Meow Wolf’s out-of-this-world exhibit helped multiply their first investors’ funds within three years. They recently close $17 million with a lead investment by Alsop Louie Partners from Silicon Valley.Meow Wolf is not alone in their ability to see a market before it has fully convened. Lee Francis, Founder of Native Realities, launched the world’s first Indigenous Comic Con to give indigenous youth a chance to see themselves as superheroes. Today Indigenous Comic Con and Lee’s publishing company Native Realities, are leading a global movement to reframe how indigenous youth see themselves in pop culture. 300,000,000 indigenous people are eager to move with them. Ivonette Albuquerque, Founder of Galpo Aplauso, in So Paulo, Brazil, believed she could build a world class theatre company employing youth living in So Paulo’s favelas. Today, she has trained over 10,000 youth, nearly all of whom go on to find well paying jobs after the program.The Fourth Industrial Revolution, like all good revolutions, is disrupting social and economic structures, forcing leaders to rethink old strategies and adapt to new realities.
