Dont Forget To Find These When Starting A New Job! - Work It Daily

Dont Forget To Find These When Starting A New Job! - Work It Daily One of my hardest working job search clients got a job offer for not only a good job, but THE JOB he told me he wanted at our first or second meeting. Both of us were on top of the world â€" back to work! Before he started his new job, we talked on the phone several times to ensure he was completing everything required of the employer for the hiring process: Drug Screen Completed Drug Screen Passed Formal Application Submitted Background Check Requested Background Check Passed References Submitted References Received Contract Received for Review Everything seemed to be going along swimmingly. We met the Friday before he was to start work, bringing with him the signed contract and employment packet â€" 41 pages! He had downloaded it, but not yet reviewed it, planning to do so following our meeting. No problem â€" all the hard work was done and he was ready to start... or so we thought! I mentioned among the 41 pages would be an I-9 documentation request or form. He would need a social security card and license or birth certificate and license or just a passport, if he had it. My client reported his passport was expired, but he had a birth certificate and his license (of course). I released him with a handshake and hearty congratulations to his new role as WORKER. We were both quite happy. That was until I got an e-mail from him later that day, “I can’t find my birth certificate and Social Security is closed. What should I do?” What can you do at that point? Should he go to Social Security at 8:00 AM when it opens and hope he makes it to work on his first day on time (8:45 AM)? This didn’t seem like a good plan. I used to request I-9 information at my second client meeting â€" I am returning to this practice IMMEDIATELY! The best advice I could give him was to visit MVA and see if he had enough documentation for an enhanced license, if possible. BUT, to present to work on time for his first day â€" the Human Resource Manager he was to meet with had doubtless had this happen a time or to before. The client e-mailed me Saturday to let me know that his mother had his birth certificate… I hope this is true. I say this because my husband and I recently applied for a passport and what he thought was his birth certificate was actually a registration of a birth certificate. The actual certificate was on file with the Bureau of Vital Statistics or the Health Department in the city or county of birth. While I awaited an update from my client, I decided it was probably a good idea to brush up on I-9 requirements and make sure my clients were as well. Here is what I found: In short, you can either bring ONE document from List A or ONE EACH (2 total) from List B or List C: LIST A DOCUMENTS â€" PASSPORT, CARD OR EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION LIST B DOCUMENTS â€" DRIVER’S LICENSE OR STATE ID CARD LIST C DOCUMENTS â€" BIRTH CERTIFICATE OR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD Starting a new job is stressful enough (good stress, but stress nonetheless!) â€" no need to feed the fire! In fact, you can verify yourself ahead of time through the US Citizenship and Immigration Service. You will probably wow the socks off your new employer! That having been said, bring the documentation with you your first day. Since this is such a new service, your employer might not be familiar with it... Be prepared to start work now and avoid the scramble to get the documentation your employer is required by law to obtain from you â€" a passport or authorization to work is all you need! When starting a new job, anything you can do to make things easier on the employer will put you in a great position! Photo Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join For Free!

Dave Carvajal Explains What It Takes to Lead a Startup

Dave Carvajal Explains What It Takes to Lead a departureup Are You Ready to Lead a Startup? Ask Dave CarvajalDo you know what it takes to be a leader? Dave Carvajal does. The startup world is an exciting place. With constant change, novel experiences, innovation, and collaboration, working at and leading a startup requires a certain level of adaptability that according to Dave Carvajal, founder of the executive search firm Dave Partners not everyone possesses. There is a clear distinction between entrepreneurship and leadership. Not every entrepreneur can cross the chasm to become a leader, Carvajal explained. But why trust Dave Carvajals opinion? Simple Its what he does for a living. For over 20 years, Carvajal has helped companies develop their recruitment gruppes and fill their open positions with boundless energy and charisma. After working for two years in Prudentials investment-banking analyst program at the beginning of his career, Carvajal found his true calling in the world of talent acquisition. He left the world of spreadsheets and derivatives behind to work for one of New York Citys top executive-search firms. Later, he joined HotJobs.com, now known as Yahoo HotJobs, as a co-founder and Vice President of Human Resources, building out the team and exceeding projected goals within the company. Carvajal then moved on to cultivate the team at TheLadders, now known as Ladders, where he continued to make a name for himself in the recruiting industry. After a shift in perspective and passion, Carvajal decided to leave the corporate world for a more entrepreneurial venture, becoming the go-to expert for filling leadership roles and curating executive teams for newly created technology startups. Helping companies, such as Tumblr and Shutterstock, build out their internal recruitment and leadership teams, Carvajal knows what it takes to be successful as an executive at a startup and has even written a book about it titled, Hire Smart From the Start The Entrepre neurs Guide to Finding, Catching, and Keeping the Best Talent for Your Company. On top of helping entrepreneurs find success in the startup world, Carvajals book also taps into his philanthropic side 100 percent of the proceeds from his book will be donated to Room to Read to promote literacy in the developing world. However, before you can use Carvajals advice to help land a leadership position, you need to figure out if being a leader is right for you. There is a clear distinction between entrepreneurship and leadership. Not every entrepreneur can cross the chasm to become a leader. Are you ready to lead?Start by doing some serious soul-searching to determine if leading a startup is what you really want. Carvajal suggests asking yourself the following seven questionsDo I really want to do this?Am I prepared to roll up my sleeves? Can I handle the time commitment required, including possible all-nighters?Am I willing to do what it takes to make this successful? Will the sacrifices I ne ed to make be worth it to me?Is this a team that I fit well with?Do I believe in the values, mission, and culture of the company?Once you are 100 percent certain this is your next step, you need to know what recruiters, like Carvajal, look for in startup leaders. What are the key qualities that separate successful candidates from the rest?To be an executive leader, you need humilityCarvajals job is to take fledgling, technology startups and find candidates to create an efficient executive board with the goal of exponentially growing the companies revenue by millions of dollars. In order to find the right leaders to reach these formidable goals, Carvajal utilizes psychology to identify leaders who possess the right combination of competence, confidence, and skill. Studies show that people with a high level of confidence in their abilities often overestimate their actual skill level. Using this logic, one of the best qualities to look for in an executive leader is a quality that, accor ding to Carvajal, is largely underestimated in American business today humility. The best leaders are committed to continuous self-improvement. In order to learn and grow, you must have an openness that humility allows, revealed Carvajal. To be a leader at a startup requires people who are able to adapt, collaborate, both lead and follow, and inspire others around a vision. There needs to be a level of agility that allows leaders, and, by extension the company, to zigzag and build a meritocracy where the best ideas rise to the top.The best leaders are committed to continuous self-improvement.For Carvajal, this means learning agility, being scrappy, leading by example, and demonstrating equal comfort as player and coach, are all things that matter at startups.Admittedly, these soft skills are hard to demonstrate via a resume and during the interview process. So, how do you show headhunters and employers that you have the qualities they are seeking?Demonstrate your ability to build str ucturesTo be considered for a startup leadership position, you need to highlight the areas of your experience where you successfully have established structures and previously led teams or business units. According to Carvajal, there are two types of people in the workforce those who are good at building structures and those who are good at following the structures created before them. The candidates who have spent a majority of their career in large, corporate environments may not be adept at creating the structures that a startup needs to grow and flourish. If I can find someone who has experience building structure and scaling organizations in terms of the infrastructure, processes, system, and people, I would much rather choose the person with that proven experience than take a chance on someone whos never done it, has very rarely done it, or has done it without success, Carvajal explained. While Carvajal admits its not a complete deal-breaker to have little experience in this are a, highlighting instances where you helped develop an internal structure, led teams on different types of projects, or created teams within your company will propel you forward in the application process.Proven like-to-like experience in scaling and building structure is the best example to show on a resume and demonstrate in an interview, Carvajal adds. He also noted that to stand out, a candidate should be able to adeptly talk about a problem set theyve tackled and how their experiences of both success and failure inspired new approaches and ways of thinking. But, what if you dont have solid, concrete experiences to bring up? Dont worry There are still ways to showcase your best self in hopes of landing the job, according to CarvajalLearn Research how the greatest companies make the best hires. Focus on what these companies do and want not what you do and want.Network Get to know the best people in your industry. The best jobs are often not advertised, and since headhunters target the best people in the field, its beneficial to be in those circles.Get your resume professionally written Your resume should read like a marketing brochure, highlighting your benefits to the employer. Most resumes are a poorly written collection of accomplishments that read like a technical manual not the cohesive career story you want to sell to employers.Create your own personal blueprint Write down what drives, motivates, and inspires you at work to anchor yourself when applying for new positions.Use social media Share original content around how you have succeeded in overcoming some challenge, achieving high measure of growth, or even explaining what you learned after a work failure and how you would apply that knowledge next time. While this seems like a lot of effort, Carvajal did share this tidbit of advice to help keep your leadership job search and your career in perspectiveProvide value. Keep your head down, stay focused, and remain driven to help achieve the companys mission.Does your resume showcase your leadership potential? We can help with a professionally written resumeTo learn more about hiring, recruiting, and making yourself the best candidate for an executive position, check out Carvajals latest book, Hire Smart From the Start The Entrepreneurs Guide to Finding, Catching, and Keeping the Best Talent for Your Company. Diversity and Inclusion at Google

Diversity and Inclusion at Google Below is an article originally written by Mistral Myers, Keyword contributor at PowerToFly Partner Google, and published on October 11, 2019. Go to Googles page on PowerToFly to see their open positions and learn more.Until I started working at Google in 2014, I had never been out at work. Now, less than five years later, everything is different Im an active volunteer leader in Googles LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Groupa Googler-run, company-supported organization that works to provide an inclusive workplace for LGBTQ+ employees, and partners closely with our Trans Employee Resource Group, which represents our transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary colleagues. As part of my role, Ive had the chance to engage LGBTQ+ Googlers across our global offices, speak publicly about being LGBTQ+ in the workplace and have even been able to share my perspectives and experiences directly with Google leadership. At this point, I can barely remember what it fe lt like to not be a visible, openly LGBTQ+ person at work. So its hard to imagine that before joining Google, I felt I couldnt come out at the office at all. As we celebrate National Coming Out Day and reflect on all of the progress weve made as a community, I am determined to remember this simple but crucial reality Openness matters. Community matters. Being able to be out at work matters. Googlers create signs supporting the LGBTQ+ community for the 2017 New York City Pride March.Prior to joining Google, Id spent time in a variety of industries, always under the careful, polite policy of evasion when it came to questions about my personal life. Perhaps I didnt need to be so secretive. I worked with wonderful, kind people, and though there were no explicit shows of support for LGBTQ+ issues from my workplace, Im sure most of my colleagues and managers wouldnt have taken issue with my identity.Still, for many LGBTQ+ folks, the fear of prejudice can nag at you, and cause you to hesitate even around the most well-meaning of coworkers. Some assume that with the ushering in of marriage equality here in the U.S., other kinds of inequality have disappeared and the movement is complete. But as many LGBTQ+-identifying people will tell you, critical challenges still remain, and it takes a conscious and dedicated effort to counteract their effects. Growing up in New Mexico, I got an early introduction to some of the challenges that LGBTQ+ people still so often face harassment, discrimination, violence. The understanding that being LGBTQ+ was unsafe was imprinted on me almost immediately, and that fear left a lasting mark. In each new city, from college to a job to graduate school to another job, I was reminded (often in not-so-subtle ways) that no matter what might change in the law or in popular culture, I should always be wary, always be careful. So I never took the chance. In so many important ways, restraining from bringing my full sel f to work hurt my ability to be a good employee. Constantly worrying about slipping up and revealing that I had a girlfriend rather than a boyfriend prevented me from feeling fully integrated. It became an obstacle to forming the kinds of professional relationships that help company culture feel cohesive and supportive. Now, I realize how much I was missing. Today, Im part of a workplace with visible LGBTQ+ leaders, explicit shows of support for LGBTQ+ cultural moments and celebrations and broad encouragement to use what makes me different to create an environment of inclusion for my fellow Googlers. This journey has made me realize how much all workplaces can benefit from supporting their employees differences, just as much as they celebrate their collective unity. Im proud. I hope you are, too. Study Shows Men Are Just As Stressed As Women In Achieving Work-Life Balance

Study Shows Men Are Just As Stressed As Women In Achieving Work-Life BalanceStudy Shows Men Are Just As Stressed As Women In Achieving Work-Life Balance The startling results of an American Psychological Association study , indicating males are as conflicted as females, contradicts a commonly held belief that men dont stress over work-life balance. However, Krister Ungerboeck, a consultant for geschftliches miteinander leaders, isnt taken aback by the fact that, despite public perception, both men and women have nearly identical levels of conflict in work-balance.Ungerboeck says men are dealing with the double whammy of feeling guilty for missing their kids lives and at the same time ashamed for not seeming cutthroat enough at work. The former CEO of a struggling software company, which he expanded 3000%, Ungerboeck experienced at first hand the personal costs of stereotypical masculinity. That in-the-trenches experience enabled Ungerboeck to found CEO Growth , a co aching firm exclusively for the C-suite.Despite common expectations, Ungerboeck says that the lessons he learned in his own career about giving consideration to the family are just as important as any bottom-line wisdom. As important as it is to help CEOs and owners push business to the next level, says the father of two, it is equally important to help them gain perspective on the value of a personal life.Glassdoor Do you see men struggling with the expectation that they must live up to a stereotype of masculinity which the report indicates is outdated and toxic?Krister Ungerboeck Yes. Theres mora of an expectation that men who are in the workforce, are going to put their job ahead of their kids, and their family. Theyre going to be the ones who work late. But the truth is a lot of us struggle with that. Men often feel they arent supposed to take a personal day when their kid is sick, so they dont.I think there is an element of cultural norms, where maybe its expected for a man to be able to stay late. When I welches a CEO, I was probably unconsciously more flexible when a woman, even a woman executive, if she needed to do some things to go do things for the kids. There was an assumption about male and female roles.I think that that maybe puts a little more pressure on male executives, or men in the workforce, who dont get that flexibility. Add to that, if I were to look at the number of times that male executives came to me and asked for time off for their kids, it was significantly lower. Many executives had wives who worked, and I think thats theres also some cultural expectation that in a two-income family (even if they are equal earners) that matters of the family would anliegen more frequently onto the female.Glassdoor How do we change the idea of masculinity in the workplace? If these are untruths, how do we knock them down?Krister Ungerboeck The change really needs to start from the top-down. Bosses need to make it clear that they prioritize their own children and their own family responsibilities, and let their employees see that it is okay to leave work early sometimes if your child is ill or has a ball game. They also need to encourage employees to use their vacation days and to take regular breaks.Glassdoor But a lot of employees feel unsafe to take family time. How do you allay those fears, changing the office culture?Krister Ungerboeck Its the boss whose actions get amplified, right? So, if your employees hear you say, Hey, Im going to my sons baseball game. Im leaving the office at 430 today they know its safe for them to attend to their families too. ? Being clear with people, letting people know, and then setting an example that its okay to leave at 5 oclock is powerful.Glassdoor One of the biggest hurdles we all face is time. How do you handle all that time at work away from family?Krister Ungerboeck I have been guilty in the past of spending too much time working. I used to tell people that my longest day was 42 hou rs. We now know we have research that shows us that we dont function well in that kind of situation. You cant get good work done.Someone told me once that its actually the people who really should be respected are the people who are able to get the job done and achieve the business results in 40-50 hours, not the people who have to take 80 hours to do the same level of results.Glassdoor Knowing from data that too many hours arent productive, have you changed your use of time?Krister Ungerboeck Yes. I dont think that Ive consistently spent more than 45 hours in the office in ten years. With emailing and phoning time (from home) its maybe 50 hours. It gets done and I have a better balance. I dont have all the stress and dorfwiese that built up when almost my whole life was work.Glassdoor By managing your hours, but not lessening your productivity it sets an example, too?Krister Ungerboeck Yes, thats setting an example. Its how you treat your employees time that also sends a message . When I would call my executives on the weekend or in the evening I have told them to let the call go to voicemail. That way I can let them know if they need to return the call right away, or if it can wait until Monday. If its an urgent matter they know to call. I dont think that, probably for the last 10 years, I can think of a time that I would regularly call any executives outside of business hours unless it was urgent. And if you have urgent matters more than a handful of times per year, then you probably have a different problem in your business.Glassdoor This study makes the point that fathers want to be more involved with family than in past generations. Is that true from your experience?Krister Ungerboeck I think definitely, that compared to the baby boomer parents, my generation (in his early 40s) wants more involvement in our kids lives. A lot of the CEOs I coach want, of course, to improve professionally, but they want help with their personal relationships too.Glassdo or You refer to yourself as a Recovering Asshole CEO. Why did you change that toxic part of your life?Krister Ungerboeck It was a combination of a couple things. Part of the change came about after one of those anonymous 360 surveys. It was part of a leadership program that I was participating in. I had been told that the more toxic the boss, the more data is needed. If 30 people are saying all the same things about you, its hard to ignore. I knew I had to change. In my case, the 360 survey crossed from business to personal. Before this survey, I thought, Im a different person at work than I am personally. But the data showed I was having the same problems at home. When you have toxic leaders, theyre probably carrying that over to how theyre raising their kids, or carrying over to how theyre communicating with their spouse. Probably better to catch that earlier, before you get divorced, or you find out you have adult children youre not connected with.Glassdoor Youre saying that worki ng style can follow you home? That work and home are intertwined and not in a good way sometimes?Krister Ungerboeck Yes. You may be saying to yourself, Hey, thats whats gotten me successful as a CEO or a boss, but if you dont change that behavior then youre going to be passing these traits on to your kids. If youve got a lot of stress at work, you may be taking that home, to your spouse and kids Theres a fair amount of data that that stress and grasflche and frustration is contagious. By taking that frustration and anger home, it spreads to their family.Glassdoor How do you remedy that cycle of stress which has so much to do with a skewed idea of masculinity?Krister Ungerboeck This goes back to getting rid of that stereotype of masculinity. Probably one of the most impactful experiences I had with my executive team was when we actually went through a vulnerability exercise, where each of the executive team members shared. Half the people were crying because they were talking about things that were very powerful, from their childhood mostly. That brought the team together at a whole new level than we had before.Glassdoor How do you show vulnerability and honesty to your employees? What was their reaction?Krister Ungerboeck Ive gotten teared up in front of my employees. The first time I got choked up was probably about 10 years ago. I will admit that there were certainly some individuals who came to me and gave me feedback, that they actually felt that was inappropriate that I was emotional in front of employees. But just as many employees gave me positive feedback that they felt more connected.Glassdoor Was it men or women that made those negative comments?Krister Ungerboeck It was men. Frankly, I think the individuals who did that probably were just not comfortable with being vulnerable themselves. So, I took it with a grain of salt. Certainly, there are people out there who still subscribe to the CEO must not show weakness, but I think its better to be au thentic in the long run. ? Its hard to keep up that faade forever as a business becomes increasingly complex. It adds to the stress which bleeds into your home life.Getting rid of toxic masculinity starts from the top. The leaders actions give a clear indication of whats valued in the working culture. If you appreciate your family and personal time, show it. That makes it all right for everyone and changes the culture.
